The phases of Marvel: how the UCM is organized

Whether or not you are a fan of Marvel movies, surely at some point you have heard of the UCM, UMC or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, whatever you want to call it. A set of characteristics and circumstances that intertwine the successes of this company's superhero movies. Today we are going to explain what is the UCM and how is it organized so that you have no doubt about it.

If you are a Marvel fan and want to watch all their movies from home, You have them all available on Disney +. If you still do not have access to the streaming platform, you can register from this link.

What is the UCM and how is it organized?

We have more or less already mentioned to you what people mean when they mention the acronym UCM. These letters refer to Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), or Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in English, and is nothing more than the franchise of superhero movies that focus on the comics published by Marvel throughout its history.

This "Universe" began with the arrival on the big screen of Iron Man in 2008 and, since then, it has been expanding with more movies, short films, more comics and television series. But, if you look closely after seeing several of these publications, there is a certain crossover of plots, locations, cast and characters in common that appear in them. Well all these intertwined stories They make up what is known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe or UCM.

But of course, with such a large number of different movies, series, characters and stories, it can be a bit confusing to follow the plot in order. Because, in addition, the chronological classification of the arrival in theaters is not the correct order in which everything happens. That is to say, there are "time" jumps between some films and others.

In order to understand this well, as in the comics, Marvel establishes a classification by phases in the UCM. Above this classification by phases are the sagas of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, in a schematic way, the organization of the UCM would be as follows:

  • Infinity Saga
    • Phase 1
    • Phase 2
    • Phase 3
  • Saga of the Multiverse
    • Phase 4
    • Phase 5
    • Phase 6

Given this general scheme, we will now analyze each phase separately to learn more about them. In addition, we will see which series and movies correspond to each one to avoid confusion. Eye! spoilers ahead.

MCU Phase 1: Avengers Assembled

the Avengers

La Phase of this universe is in charge of presenting the central characters of everything we will see in the UCM and the organizations that also appear during the plot: Tony Stark, Thor, Bruce Banner, Nicholas Fury, Steven Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, Clinton Barton, SHIELD and HYDRA.

Therefore, the following films correspond to this phase of the UCM:

  • Iron Man (2008)
  • The Incredible Hulk (2008)
  • Iron Man 2 (2010)
  • Thor (2011)
  • Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
  • The Avengers (2012)

Iron Man (2008)

As we already told you before, the first movie that started all this of the MCU was Iron Man in 2008. Here we meet Tony Stark, a dedicated weapons maker billionaire with a mad liking for technology. After a tragic event in his life, he completely changes and decides to stop making weapons to do something better for humanity: create the armor that turns him into Iron-Man.

The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Another well-known Marvel scientist is Bruce Banner, although you may know him better as his "other self": Hulk. After an error in his work, he is exposed to a large amount of Gamma radiation, which causes him to "mutate" and become a green giant that wants to destroy everything in his path.

The curious thing in the history of this character is that it is about the few that Marvel does not have, at a cinematographic level, with all the rights. Therefore, we could say that both the original Hulk movie and the Incredible Hulk movie tell the story of the Hulk, but somehow they are not entirely owned by the superhero company.

Iron Man 2 (2010)

In the second installment de Iron Man, now everyone is aware of its existence and even, after Tony Stark's statements at the end of the first film, they know who is hiding behind the armor. The government wants Stark to reveal the secrets of his armor while he flatly refuses. Meanwhile, a new enemy appears from behind the shadows to try to take down Iron-Man and, of course, Tony himself.

Thor (2011)

happening now Thor, the god of thunder who comes from the kingdom of Asgard. In this first installment we meet a very arrogant Thor who only wants to fight against everything he comes across. Ignoring his father, he challenges the kingdom of the ice giants and unleashes a war that was not expected to end that way: being banished to Earth and taking away his hammer.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Another great acquaintance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the Captain America, also known as Steven Rogers. A young man who only wanted to join the army to defend his country but, due to his physical condition and health, was constantly rejected. A general learned of his story and offered him the chance to participate in an experiment called "Operation Rebirth." After injecting him with the super soldier Steve serum, he completely changes and becomes Captain America.

The Avengers (2012)

This is the first installment in which we see several of the characters from the UCM together. In The Avengers Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, and Black Widow are forced to work together to fight an enemy that threatens Earth. This installment is where the team that we would later know as "The Avengers" and their work with SHIELD begins to form.

MCU Phase 2

the age of ultron

In the second phase the story focuses on the development of the main characters and their work with Fury's company after the battle of New York. Here we will also meet new characters like Ant-Man, all the members of Guardians of the Galaxy, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff. And, just before ending, it is discovered that the Nazi organization of HYDRA is working within SHIELD, something that the Avengers must put an end to. In this phase of the UCM we can therefore see the following films:

  • Iron Man 3 (2013)
  • Thor: The Dark World (2013)
  • Captain America: Winter Soldier (2014)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
  • Ant Man (2015)

Iron Man 3 (2013)

In the third installment from the history of Iron Man, Tony Stark must face an enemy that "he himself created" in the past. A being with supernatural power, which he himself developed through scientific experiments, and who will now fight to destroy everything Tony wants, including his partner.

Thor: The Dark World (2013)

After everything that happened in his first installment and in The Avengers, in Thor: the Dark World the god of thunder wants to bring order to the cosmos. But, an ancient race of dark elves led by Malekith has been waiting in the shadows to try to dominate the universe. As? With the power of the Ether, a dark power that we will later learn is an infinity gem.

Captain America: Winter Soldier (2014)

Also continuing with the events in New York, the story of Steven Rogers continues until Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The captain is in the process of adjusting to the modern world when, this time, he has to ally with the black widow to fight a conspiracy that threatens SHIELD. When all the secrets are revealed, both will have to fight against an enemy that comes from the past and whom they call "The Winter Soldier".

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

With Guardians of the Galaxy A breath of fresh air came to Marvel that many people appreciated. A story in which Peter Quill, an adventurous and somewhat cheeky human, finds himself involved in a quest that threatens his life and that of the rest of the universe. Some beings from another planet want the orb that he stole on a mission as a bounty hunter. A box that hides something very powerful and that Thanos wants above all else.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

En Avengers: Age of Ultron the team must meet again. Tony Stark's curiosity causes him to awaken a being that will threaten the earth and that everyone will have to face so that he does not end the world. From this film will come the character that we will later know as Vision.

Ant Man (2015)

After being released from prison for a robbery, Scott Lang is forced to become a hero called ant-man. A somewhat peculiar hero, who can shrink thanks to the suit developed by his mentor, Dr. Henry Pym. Together they will have to fight against a guy who threatens to sell the technology of the suit to the army, endangering the world.

MCU Phase 3

The war against Ultron is a difficult time on earth and in Avengers history, and this is where phase 3 of the MCU begins. With a completely separate team, new members begin to arrive in this whole story, such as Stephen Strange, Black Panter or Peter Parker. Later, they will all have to unite again to fight against a great common enemy. An enemy that threatens, and it seems that it will be the one that is closest to doing so, to life as they know it in the Universe. In this phase of the UCM we can see the following movies:

  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  • Doctor Strange (2016)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
  • Thor: Ragnarök (2017)
  • Black Panther (2018)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
  • Captain Marvel (2019)
  • Avengers: Endgame (2019)
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

En Captain America: Civil War We find two divided sides of the Avengers: one led by Captain America, who fights to protect humanity, and another headed by Tony Stark, who is affected by the political pressure of the government. Who will win?

Doctor Strange (2016)

Coming to the movie Doctor Strange, we know a much more complex character within the UCM. After an accident, Doctor Stephen Strange, an egocentric neurosurgeon, is forced to leave his profession and try to heal from an accident that will allow him to learn the secrets of the world of mysticism. In turn, once most of these mystical secrets are understood, he will have to fight against an evil ex-student who intends to bring an ancient monster to earth.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

The family that they formed in the first installment is reinforced in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Here this team will know the ancestry of Quill, which was unknown until now, but not everything will go as expected. The team will have to fight against an eternal, a mystical and ultra powerful being.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

En Spider-Man: Homecoming we are well introduced to Peter Parker's new character who first appeared in the Captain America: Civil War movie. A very smart young boy who is excited to have helped the Avengers. But, after this, he will have to return to his daily life and be the friend and neighbor Spider-Man. Of course, after the appearance of the Vulture, everything he knows will be threatened again.

Thor: Ragnarök (2017)

La third installment of Thor has the name of Ragnarok. It all starts with an Asgard ruled by Loki posing as his father. But everything will get worse with the arrival of the sister of these two characters, Hela. She is she only seeks to steal the throne and rule Asgard at all costs, even if she has to destroy it.

Black Panther (2018)

After what happened in Captain America: Civil War, King T'Challa returns home to proclaim himself the king of Wakanda. But not everything will be so easy, since two enemies stalk the throne and they will not make things easy for him. Black Panther.

Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

Once again, after Civil War, another of the MCU characters, such as Ant-Man, tries to return to normality in his life. While serving house arrest, Hope and Doctor Pym need his help again. Scott and Hope will team up as Ant-man and the Wasp, to fight against a disaster that comes from the past and moves between quantum fields.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Despite the efforts of this team of Avengers to establish peace in the Universe, a new danger lurks on the other side of the Universe in Infinity War. Or rather, an old danger that has resurfaced. Thanos wants to gather the Infinity Stones to end, according to his plan, half of the beings in the Universe. The Avengers will have to try to stop him, but with each gem Thanos collects, he becomes stronger.

Captain Marvel (2019)

In this film we learn the story of Carol Danvers, a member of a race of noble warrior heroes who will have to help in the galactic defense against the attack of two alien races that arrive on earth. To achieve this, she must become Capitana marvel, one of the most powerful members of the MCU.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

The Universe is in ruins after what happened with Thanos's attack. But, to solve this big problem, the Avengers meet again with the most daring plan thought to date: travel to different points in the past to restore order to the universe. But it may not all happen as they wanted and they have to fight this titan again in Avengers: Endgame.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

After what happened in Endgame, Spiderman feels very alone in the Avengers team. To clear his head, Peter plans to go on vacation with the institute in Spider-Man: Far From Home. But, after a cunning deception, he finds himself embroiled, once again, in a fight to save the world from a mistake he himself made.

MCU Phase 4

No Way Home Spider-Man.

This penultimate installment of Spider-Man puts an end to the previous phase and, therefore, kicks off what we know as Phase 4 of the UCM. This is the moment we are in right now, with the Multiverse unleashed after the events of Spider-Man No Way Home and also some seen in the Disney+ series, as is the case with WandaVision, Loki and even What if...? It is obvious that big changes are coming and it seems that one of the great pillars of this phase will have Dr. Strange as the protagonist. Without forgetting Scarlet Witch, that he could unleash all his wrath after seeing what happened in the series. Be that as it may, fasten your seatbelts, the Multiverse is coming.

So far, we know that the following films correspond to this phase of the UCM:

  • Black Widow (2021)
  • Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
  • Eternals (2021)
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
  • Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)

phase 4 marvel ucm

But of course, for the first time in this UCM, cinemas will not be the only source of information about what is happening in the universe and we will have the help of the first Marvel Studios series that will be released on the North American streaming service. These that you have just below are the ones that will be included within that Phase 4 and that are in some cases already released and, in others, on the way to doing so.

  • Wanda Vision (2021)
  • Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
  • Loki (2021)
  • What If…? (2021)
  • Hawkeye (2021)
  • Moon Knight (2022)
  • Ms Marvel (2022)
  • She-Hulk: Lawyer She-Hulk (2022)

Black Widow (2021)

This film is the first corresponding to the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was released late due to the pandemic more than a year later than expected, on July 9, 2021, and we finally got to know the family background (so to speak) of Natalia Romanoff, also known as Black Widow. She herself will show us the darkest part of her past that comes back to end her.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

The movie of Shang-Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings It is one of the most surprising because it comes to look like an off-topic, but it is more connected to the UCM than it seems. Two brothers, a father who has been ruling the world in the shadows thanks to the ten rings and a prophecy that could come true. It will be interesting to check the way in which this character will be linked to the other events of the UCM in the coming years.

Eternals (2021)

Eternal is a movie that doesn't seem like it's from Marvel and its choral aspect with so many superheroes on screen seems to dilute what's really happening in the background. In the same way as with the movie Sang-Chi, the connection of these heroes is not very clear with the future events of the UCM although at the end of the film, in one of the post-credit scenes, we can find some of the unknowns that awoke. Without a doubt, Eternals has given a lot to talk about his position in the Marvel puzzle. Their justification for why they did not act against Thanos is in the movie, but we have always thought that it makes no sense that they did not act, since the objective of said villain is completely opposite to what they seek.

Wanda Vision (2021)

Baptized in Spain as Scarlet Witch (spoiler alert!) the first Disney+ original series based on the UCM It takes us to events after Avengers Endgame. Wanda falls into madness and will show the world her incredible powers, transforming reality at her whim. A lot of attention to what happens in the final moments, which connect with what Dr. Strange narrates in the Multiverse of Madness and a good part of the essence of this Phase 4.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)

After what happened in Avengers Endgame, as was the case with Wandavision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier also intend to return to their lives. But, as usual, the events shown in this series do not make it easy for them. Unfortunately, of everything seen on Disney+, It is the most lackluster and meaningless fiction of all those that have been released, although it helps to know who will play certain roles in future MCU movies.

Loki (2021)

The series connects directly with one of the funniest scenes in Avengers: Endgame and from there, we will follow in the footsteps of Loki through a crazy Time Variation Agency that ensures that the time lines are fulfilled as they are defined by beings that take care that the universe does not disintegrate. In addition to a fun and original plot, we will find out what is the origin of the Multiverse being unleashed to cause chaos in the world and countless other planets.

What If…? (2021)

This series takes us to an original scenario in which characters we know well from the UCM begin to go on adventures that are not the ones we know about them. A Captain Anérica who does not become one, a Doctor Strange who goes crazy trying to revive his fiancée and an endless number of situations that are more original. Mind you, what appeared to be an isolated cartoon experiment, It has become an inexhaustible source of information facing the moment you see Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Hawkeye (2021)

Small but very interesting series, which introduces us to a new character (Kate Bishop) who accompanies Hawkeye on his Christmas adventures through New York. The threat, this time, will be a group of thugs who are causing panic in the city. Apart from having to face them, in the background we will meet a much greater threat that points in a direction that we are not going to reveal to you. We will only tell you that this character has a connection with another that you have already glimpsed in Spider-Man No Way Home. And up to here we can read.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

This is the third installment of the Spider-man saga, titled as Spider-Man: No Way Home. You know, the saga starring actor Tom Holland. In this case, the identity of Peter Parker is discovered as Spider-Man, which will make the young man lose the secrecy that he so longed for. To avoid this, he will turn to Dr. Strange and there will be unleashed part of the madness in which Phase 4 of the UCM will be immersed. You know… the Multiverse! One of the greatest successes of Marvel Studios in its history, which has touched the 2.000 million dollars of collection worldwide.

Moon Knight (2022)

Moon Knight (Moon Knight) is the name of a hero that few knew until Marvel Studios presented him as part of Phase 4 and, the truth is that in a very short time he has managed to enlist a legion of fans behind him who have fallen asleep. before the staging of this sinister inhabitant of the shadows. A hero with extraordinary powers and that in the first season of the Disney+ series it has left very good feelings. We will have to follow up on it to see how it evolves and what role it acquires within the UCM.

Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)

Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

After the events that started in WandaVision and continued in Loki o Spider-Man: No Way Home (and some chapters of What if...?), it becomes clear that the future of superheroes is at stake with the danger of the collision of infinity of new versions of each one. And this is seen very clearly in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a film that is halfway between an episode of Doctor Who and one of Rick & Morty.

It is a bit difficult to talk about this installment without releasing a huge spoiler —although we released it a few lines ago—, but the truth is that this film demonstrates the infinite number of paths that the Marvel Cinematic Universe can take Thanks to the Multiverse. Strange will have to fight versions of himself, as well as superheroes from other universes that are not as we know them. And all in a fairly entertaining film with a style that is quite detached from the classic superhero movies we already know.

Dr. Strange is in charge of showing the path of the events that we will see in the next productions that are pending release. Which are not few. And so it can be seen even in his post-credits scene.

Ms Marvel (2022)

The pandemic delayed some Disney plans and one of the main victims was Ms. Marvelalthough we finally have her with us. The fiction started leaving very good sensations as an initiation product for the youngest fans, although it has been the title that has been the least enthusiastic of all and the one that has generated the least audience.

Despite this, Kamala Khan is already pointing ways towards become one more piece of this Phase 5, it's just taking too long to boot up and show us the way it wants to go. Aim for Ms. Marvel, it smacks of a big role in the future…

Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)

Marvel opened their mouths with several (and hilarious at times) trailers for the movie in which the way forward was clear: Thor decides to leave his friends, the Guardians of the Galaxy, to find himself and make sense of his life. life, away from his profession as a self-sacrificing superhero. The problem is that he will have to abandon those intentions because of Gorr, a god-killing villain of those who make an era and who will lead the God of Thunder to create a new group of allies with whom to fight.

The film opened in theaters on July 7 to generally good reception. And it is that, although it is true that it is far from the tone of the rest of the UCM, viewers already know which foot its director (Waititi) limps on and they knew that you would find a fun and entertaining proposal above all.

She-Hulk: Lawyer She-Hulk

On August 17, 2022, another of the most interesting fictions that would premiere on Disney + throughout the summer arrived. Neither more nor less than the female version of the Hulk, a lawyer who points ways as a defender of superheroes and maybe even villains. The end has left us some other interesting twist for Phase 5 of the UCM and small clues about what we will see from 2023 on the streaming platform.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)

Much was said about whether or not this sequel to Black Panther after the actor's death Chadwick Boseman in August 2020. After thinking about it a lot, the management of Marvel Studios decided that the role of T'Challa would be deserted, and that in this second installment characters already presented in the original film would be explored, as well as new superheroes. The possibility of bringing the actor back through special effects was also completely ruled out.

The movie of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever It is scheduled to premiere on November 11, 2022. It will star Lupita Nyong'o and will be directed by Ryan Coogler. You can see the first preview that was released a little above (what an intro song, huh?) and, on these lines, its official trailer.

Phase 5

marvel phase 5.jpg

The latest events at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 have allowed us to reorganize the most recent release announcements, close Phase 4 -which in the words of Kevin Feige "has served to reset the UCM and meet the new characters"- and find out How will the fifth start? Thus, wakanda forever will be in charge of finishing the fourth stage while Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will inaugurate Phase 5.

These are them films that we know will be part of it and their planned release dates.

  • Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (February 17, 2023)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (May 5, 2023)
  • The Marvels (July 28, 2023)
  • Blade (November 3, 2023)
  • Captain America: New World Order (May 3, 2024)
  • Thunderbolts (July 26, 2024)

And these are the series that will also be part of the fifth phase and that you will see the light of day on Disney+:

  • Secret Invasion (Spring 2023)
  • What If… Season 2 (early 2023)
  • Echo (Summer 2023)
  • Loki – Season 2 (Summer 2023)
  • Daredevil: Born Again (Spring 2024)
  • Ironheart (Fall 2023)
  • Agatha: Coven of Chaos (Winter 2023)

What will this phase bring us? It's true that since the end of Endgame, the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn't had a major villain threatening stability like Thanos did. The relief seems that it will take it Kang the Conqueror, which already appeared in the series Loki and that it will make an appearance in a much more notable way in theaters through Quantumania. Kang should therefore be the new "big bad" of this phase, and looking at the full plan of the presentations that were made, if he ends up settling, he may not end up defeated at the end of 2023, so that we have Conquistador for a while.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)

After a long wait we have finally been able to enjoy the first preview of the new Ant-Man movie. With a less particular name, Quantumania will transport us to a new universe, the Quantum Realm, where Ant-Man (again in the shoes of Paul Rudd) and the Wasp (once again played by Evangeline Lilly) will meet Kang himself (played by Jonathan Majors). We also have Michelle Pfeiffer and Bill Murray in the cast as well as Kathryn Newton, who plays Cassie Lang, the daughter of Ant-Man.

Judging by the progress you have on these lines and also under this paragraph, we will enjoy a movie full of action, color and special effects in which our protagonists will travel to a secret universe below ours full of secrets. We already know that the Ant-Man films aren't exactly the most memorable in the saga, but possibly that's where their success lies: not being too pretentious and simply developing an entertaining story that makes us have a good time.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The very James Gunn is going to be in charge of the third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Volume 3 will be released at the beginning of May to, presumably, close the story and the saga of this very particular group. Once again we will meet the usual suspects such as Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña or Dave Bautista, even with the voices (in the original version, of course) of Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper. There is also a new villain in the room, High Evolutionary, who will appear for the first time on screen with British actor Chukwudi Iwuji tasked with bringing him to life.

Gunn has promised us a epic end for the group, so a great film is expected, of which we already have a first preview. How about?

Blades (2023)

Marvel's Blade movie poster

We still have very little information about that movie that will hit theaters almost at the end of the year. It will certainly not go unnoticed: it is a reboots, in full rule, from what we know so far of the character, whom we have always associated with extreme violence, blood and foul words. Evidently, Marvel Studios will tone down to include it in the MCU, so we'll forget about Wesley Snipes' vampire slayer forever to welcome the daywalker from Mahershala Ali.

Phase 6

marvel phase 6.jpg

There are still months left until Phase 5 just starts but, obviously, that is not an impediment for Phase 6 (the last one in the Multiverse Saga) to already be underway at the Marvel factory. The firm has confirmed that it will start at the end of 2024 with the (highly anticipated by many) film in cinemas of Fantastic 4 and we already know 2 more titles added to the list.

  • Fantastic Four (November 8, 2024)
  • Avengers: The Kang Dynasty (May 2, 2025)
  • Avengers: Secret Wars (November 7, 2025)

It's a bit strange that Marvel Studios is in such a hurry to announce such long-term projects. However, the move makes a lot of sense. MCU Phase 5 doesn't have many of the titles people were expecting to see. And that could make some superhero fans lose some interest in this universe.

Talking about the premieres that we will see two or three years from now is the gancho perfecto so that those who have been disappointed with the announcement of Phase 5 do not lose the thread. Would you leave everything knowing that in a couple of years the Fantastic 4 will return and shortly after, two Avengers movies?

Everything indicates that Phase 5 will not be anything other than the scenario that this Grand finale that Kevin Feige's have prepared for us. All that remains is to wait and cross our fingers so that nothing strange happens that could delay these productions.
