HP Omen 15-dh0001ns, review: a very balanced gaming laptop

I admit that little by little gaming laptops attract my attention. I know the advantages of a desktop PC, but if you want something that takes up little space and that you can take with you whenever you feel like it, they are the best option. For the past few weeks I have been testing the HP Omen 15-dh0001ns, a team with a price that is not bad and, above all, a set of components that make it a very balanced solution in my opinion. So, I tell you more about him.

A gamer design but not excessive

The design of laptops with a gamer profile is what I always liked the least from them. Lines that are too straight, colored lights everywhere and, on many occasions, a thickness and dimensions that made them equipment that you could take from one place to another but did not offer that real portability that one looks for in that, in a laptop.

This time it doesn't break the norm but it doesn't go too far either. Its dimensions, weight and design make it more attractive to me than other options. Perhaps the only thing I liked the least were those "cuts" on the screen when it opens. It is nothing serious, but what caught my attention and liked less. Although I understand that for HP it can become a sign of identity so that its equipment is easily recognizable.

The positive part is its construction materials and the quality of the assembly itself. This for a team of this price is the least that is expected, but it is appreciated that in general it feels like a solid and durable device. Also, with 2,6 Kg of weight It's not super light but you can take it with you without killing yourself.

As a detail that also It caught my attention is its lower grille. With a considerable size, the best thing is that it further facilitates the proper functioning of the refrigeration system. This, plus this balance in its components, mean that even when it is at full capacity, the heat dissipates well and avoids the inconvenience of a computer running at full speed and at high temperatures that could bother you while you write, edit or play with your wrists resting on the upper chassis. .

For the rest, in terms of design there is always a very personal factor that means that you should be the one to assess whether or not it seems attractive to you.

Connectivity, multimedia and user experience

Although you will be wondering about the pure and simple performance, before I am going to tell you about its connectivity options, multimedia experience and use.

Connectivity

The equipment comes with three USB type A connectors compatible with the USB 3.1 Gen 1 standard. This allows you to use high-speed SSD hard drives and improve actions such as backups, data transfers or working with external drives when editing video, for example.

It also has HDMI output to connect external screens and also a mini Display Port output. However, the most striking and to be appreciated is the Thunderbolt 3 connection. This allows, among other things, to connect an eGPU with which to give more graphic power if needed. It is an option for a niche of users, but having it is always appreciated.

For the rest, there is an ethernet connection that is useful in events or for network games where you do not want delays due to a poor Wi-Fi connection; and it also has a bluetooth connection and combined audio output and microphone input through the use of a TRRS connector.

Screen and sound

The panel used here offers a 1080p resolution, good color representation and also very satisfactory contrast, brightness and saturation. In general, all types of content look really good and in practically all types of situations. If there is a lot of light and it falls directly on the panel, you may feel that it lacks some brightness, but in the usual environments where it is used and how these devices are used, you will not have problems.

However, The great value of this screen is in its refreshment. With 144 Hz, the fluidity of the images in titles that they support and that their GPU can move with high frame rates per second is when having a screen like this is most appreciated. As I say, it makes a difference compared to gaming laptops that maintain traditional screens at 60 Hz.

And regarding the sound, although the speakers signed by B&O perform well, if you want an immersive and quality experience you will have to use good wired or wireless headphones, that's up to you.

Keyboard and mouse

Here I am fast. The keyboard works very well, I like it for the travel of the keys, hardness, size and spacing. I've gotten used to it quickly and both when playing and writing a text, it seemed to me that it behaves very well. In addition, the options at the software level allow you to configure your RGB lighting system so that you adapt it to your preferences and uses at all times.

The trackpad on its side is correct and period. Don't expect a great experience or performance, it works well, it has independent left and right buttons and little else. Its size is not very generous but, as a gaming laptop that it is, the idea is that you connect an external mouse from minute zero.

A very balanced performance

If I had to quickly summarize this HP Omen the word would be: balanced. With a 7th generation Intel Core i9 processor, 16 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD and an NVIDIA RTX 2060 graphics, you can run any game and enjoy them without major problems.

The solvency of the processor and the graphics allow you to play most of the current titles at 1080p resolution and maintain a frame rate per second of between 45 and 60 fps with a high level of detail. Logically, if you want a higher frame rate per second, you will have to modify the level of textures and other visual adjustments depending on the game, but being able to play the vast majority of titles at stable 1080p and 60p Without seeing the experience penalized, it is something that they like a lot.

Finally, when it comes to using creative tools such as the Adobe suite with Photoshop, Premiere or After Effects, this laptop is also a good option if you want to perform certain tasks in addition to playing games.

A good gaming laptop that does not skyrocket in price

The HP Omen is an interesting team, with a very balanced performance and a price that doesn't skyrocket. It is not cheap, it costs about $1.599, But if you are looking for a team with which you can travel to enjoy your favorite games wherever you go, it seems to me a good option.

It has a good construction, it is not very heavy, its graphics performs well and the rest of the components live up to expectations. My big drawback: the charger. Most PC laptop chargers still seem like real bricks to me that are lazier to transport than the laptop itself.
