Who said that animated series were only for children? These types of productions have become very fashionable in recent years and many of us already enjoy those animations with touches of humor and more adult situations. But, if there is one of them that has stood out above the rest, that is the one of Rick and Morty. Today we tell you everything you need to know about the wacky animated series for adults.

Story behind the success of Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty is an adult animated television series created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon in 2013 for "Adult Swin". What is Adult Swim? If it doesn't ring a bell, it's the Cartoon Network affiliate that dedicates its programming to adult animation content broadcast without censorship. A broadcast that, according to its own creators, is a mix between Modern Family, The Simpsons y Futurama, mixed with constant nods to great science fiction sagas such as Back to the Future o Star Trek, Entre otras muchas.

This series tells the adventures of Rick, a mad, selfish and alcoholic scientist who, along with his grandson Morty, live moments that mix family problems with time travel, intergalactic or even through time. All this is lived through a base of black humor and deep satire on society that, as it is more adult content, fits perfectly with its target audience.

After a series of circumstances, this mad scientist ends up moving into his daughter's house. Beth (Morty's mother). There, together with her grandson, is where those crazy trips begin and that, on many occasions, put them on the brink of death. Little by little Rick tries to influence Morty so that he does not end up like his father, Jerry, a nobody without success in life and who always depends on his wife.

But origin of this series They are prior to their official publication. This began with a short film designed and animated by Roiland himself for a film festival. The short was based on the characters from Rexit to the future Marty and Doc. But, after Harmon's dismissal from NBC in 2013 for different arguments and legal issues, he and Roiland developed the series that we know today as Rick and Morty based on the characters of said short.

Now that you know a little more about the plot of this animated series for adults, it's time to introduce you to the characters of it so that you know them thoroughly. A series of "people" with many problems to solve.

One of the main figures is obviously Rick Sanchez. A totally mad scientist, designer of thousands of inventions, and who only seems to care about himself. He has spent the last 20 years traveling through space and time, to the point that, for him, his home planet is called "Universe Planet Earth C-137". He usually excuses himself that he takes his grandson Morty on his trips to tan him and that he does not end up being a wretch like his father. But, the real reason he wants me to come along is that Morty's basic brain waves make his own go undetected, therefore, we could say that he uses his grandson as a human shield.

On the other hand, being the co-star of the series, we have Morty smith. It is about a very impressionable and unintelligent 14-year-old boy, who is used by his grandfather in his crazy intergalactic adventures. At the beginning of the series he is a shy character who is terrified of any type of situation but, as the series progresses, he is the one who evolves the most of all. To such an extent that, in the fifth season, he will confess his feelings to his platonic love and this will lead him to save his life and Rick's.

The character of Summer Smith plays Morty's older sister. A 17-year-old teenager with a totally superficial behavior and who is only concerned about looking good in front of her friends. Despite the fact that she is a smart girl, she tends to show jealousy towards her brother because of her constant adventures with Grandpa Rick who, despite her constant slights, is her hero.

Morty's mother is beth smith, another of the "secondary" characters of this series. Like his father, she is a person who drinks as an excuse for everything but, unlike him, she is a serious person when the situation requires it. She is a veterinary surgeon specialized in horses although, really, she regrets not having been a doctor.

Finally, we have Jerry Smith, father of Morty and Summer, and husband of Beth. He is defined as the most pathetic and dependent character in the entire series. Hated by Rick, in constant arguments with his wife, bad father and insecure by nature.

• Although it may seem that the characters in Rick and Morty have totally different voices, the one in charge of giving them is a single person. It is about its own creator, Justin Roiland (in the original version, of course).
• As we already told you at the beginning of this article, this series was based on a short film based on the story of the film Back to the Future, which was enough to sell the idea for Adult Swin. The curious thing about all this is that the script for this was developed in just 6 hours and the entire development of the pilot chapter (animated by Roiland himself) was done on the same working day.
• That Rick's character is constantly burping was initially a mistake. While Roiland was voicing Doc in the short film, he burped by accident. It seems that the idea had an impact and in development, so Rick later ended up inheriting that "tagline".

• The chapter in which Rick remembers the death of his wife is a tribute to the series of Breaking Bad.. Take a good look at the house where that memory is reproduced and that you can see right above here, doesn't it look familiar?
• The creators of the series have acknowledged on numerous occasions that the character of Rick has a dark and shocking secret, but as of now, it has not been revealed.
