What are space videos?
Apple has once again coined a new term, and that is that everything related to virtual reality is described as spatial. For this reason, three-dimensional videos are called space videos, and the Apple Vision Pro glasses are known as a spatial computing device. Everything spatial remains at home, but we know perfectly well that they refer to Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality and everything that has to do with virtual experiences.
And that is where spatial videos come into play, which are stereoscopic recordings recorded with two cameras that allow the recording to be reviewed in three dimensions, in order to feel that we are present at the recording location. These videos must be played with virtual reality glasses, or else it will be impossible to appreciate the effect in three dimensions.
Which iPhone is compatible with space videos
The simplest way to get high-quality spatial video is using an iPhone. Apple's phone has the function to record this type of videos, although not all models are compatible, since a specific processor is required to be able to handle all the information in real time.
The iPhone models that support spatial video recording are:
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
In both cases, the phones need to have iOS 17.2 or higher, since it was this version that introduced the function. The cameras used with the main and ultra wide angle.
How to record a space video
The spatial video recording function is disabled by default in iOS 17.2, so the first thing you should do is activate it in the corresponding section. To do this, you will have to do the following:
- Open the Settings of the system
- Select the app Camera
- Enter the section Formats
- Activate the function space video for Apple Vision Pro
Once the function is activated, you will be able to see how in the camera application when you select the video mode, a new Apple Vision Pro icon in the lower left corner. You must press this icon to activate spatial recording, and you must place the phone horizontally, otherwise it will not let you start recording.
The video must be placed horizontally due to the placement of the cameras, since the two cameras used in this mode are the wide angle and the main one. When you press the record button, the phone begins recording simultaneously with both cameras, and the final video will look like a single image.
You must keep in mind that the resulting file includes two different videos, so the file size is much larger than normal. The file in question is recorded at 1080p resolution with a rate of 30 frames per second (currently with an iPhone 15 Pro) and a minute of video usually takes up about 65 megabytes.
Recommendations
When recording a video it is advisable to use a tripod o stay very firm, since the recording obtains better results with the fewest possible movements. The subject or object to be recorded must have the appropriate distance, which is usually the same as what is needed for Portrait Mode. If recorded too close, the result may not be as expected.
In addition, a specific amount of light is required, since in scenes where light is scarce the system will constantly warn that there is not enough light (although it will allow you to press the record button).
Space Video Compatible Glasses
Apple developed the spatial video recording mode so that users could create content and memories with the iPhone that they could play back later when the Vision Pro went on sale. The interesting thing is that not only the apple vision pro are able to play these videos.
Meta updated their goal quest 3, goal quest 2 y MetaQuest Pro so that they were able to play spatial videos without problems, thus allowing you to experience 3D vision without the need for an Apple viewer. In this way, today spatial videos can be played on Vision Pro and Meta Quest viewers (except for the first generation).
For the Meta Quest to be able to play spatial videos, they need to be updated to version V62 of the system.
How to watch a space video with virtual reality glasses
At the moment, space videos recorded with the iPhone Pro 15 and iPhone 15 Pro Max can be viewed with Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3/2/Pro. In the Vision Pro we will have to use the Photos application to review the gallery and watch the videos in question, while in the Meta Quest we will have to use the gallery.
Can a spatial video be opened on any device?
A spatial video can be opened without problems on a computer or mobile phone, however, what will be played will be a single version of the two videos taken, so we will simply see a normal video without a three-dimensional effect. At least you will ensure video playback, and you can rest assured that even when recording in spatial format, you will be able to continue watching the videos whenever you want from any type of device.
