It was the year 1991 when some gadgets called video game consoles began to be known in Spanish stores. Until that moment, Spain had been a country of 8 and 16-bit personal microcomputers (ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Amiga 500, etc.) although the industry would never be the same again, among other things, by the arrival of a blue porcupine, with red boots and that attended to the name of Sonic. Don't you remember the moment you met him?
Mario's natural rival
One cannot get away from the idea that Sonic was born as a direct response to Mario, the Nintendo character who since the 80s was known for his games, first, as the anonymous protagonist of some Game & Watch and, second, as the leader of the gaming revolution that took place in Japan from 1985, at which time he arrived to the NES market. It was obvious that if SEGA, in the early 90s, wanted to have a chance against its rival, it had to put a familiar face at the head of its armies.
And that character was Sonic. A hero who couldn't even be similar to Nintendo's and who had, yes or yes, to find a way to differentiate himself, to fill his personality. So SEGA did not hesitate: friendly appearance, although a bit rebellious, and with a feature that makes it unique, its speed. That would be the big difference that was going to characterize the character and, also, all his games that offered a radically different entertainment formula from the platforms devised by Miyamoto for his Mario.
Naoto Oshima and Hirokazu Yasuhara, creators of Sonic, they were inspired by many sources and one of them was a WWII pilot that he loved to fly at high speed, which caused his hair to stand on end. They got some idea from there, but also from the boots, which were painted red and white in clear reference to Santa Claus, while that design of the sneakers was very clearly inspired by the cover of Michael Jackson's Bad album, published just a few years ago. before, in 1987.
Why so much speed?
In the summer of 1991 SEGA already had ready Sonic to launch it in Spain, with a complete marketing campaign in which it was clear that it was going to be, from that moment, its icon. That game impacted millions of kids who had never seen a character run so fast across the screen, in a challenge that the Japanese sought to show the technical power of their Mega Drive, the 16-bit machine condemned to compete with Super nintendo.
And the bet did not go wrong at all because practically from the first moment Sonic became the brand image of SEGA, completely revolutionizing the catalog of games exclusive to machines such as the Master System, Game Gear, Mega CD and 32X. Unfortunately, the move to SegaSaturn, above all, was somewhat more traumatic and barely left us with the odd project that, on top of that, ended up being cancelled, as is the case with Sonic Xtreme. Fortunately, with Dreamcast things returned to normal and we learned about the jump to 3D of the character, with two sonic adventures extraordinary that are already part of the imagination of any follower that prides itself
Building on that initial success of classic platform games, many other legs with different themes have appeared, who have helped make Sonic one of the undoubted protagonists in the history of video games, with more than 30 years behind him and all the strength intact that, if nothing changes, we will see a resurgence this year thanks to sonic frontiers.
All the games that have come out of Sonic
Now, We leave you, organized by types of games, all those that have arrived to the market under the tutelage of the franchise.
